Condolence note on the passing of Daniel da Fonseca

04.03.2024 |

It is with deep sorrow that the Climate Observatory receives the news of the death of diplomat Daniel Machado da Fonseca, head of the Climate Action Division of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

An expert on international negotiations in the energy sector, Fonseca was an experienced member of the group seeking to rebuild Brazil’s leadership in the international climate debate, and had been appointed to coordinate the Task Force for Global Mobilization against Climate Change of the G20. As a negotiator and spokesperson for the group of developing countries (G77), he had a key role in brokering the deal that allowed for a decision on just transition at COP28, in 2023. He suffered a heart attack this Sunday (3) while attending a meeting of the Green Climate Fund in Kigali, Rwanda.

His absence will be felt at this moment when the eyes of the world are on Brazil, which presides over the G20 and COP30, seeking leadership in the race to limit global warming to 1.5°C in this critical decade.

Our solidarity is with Daniel’s family at this time.
